Week 1 of Foreign Language for High School

This series is the personal experience of the founder of TalkBox.Mom using the program with her teenager for high school.

We’re celebrating our first week of using TalkBox.Mom for high school with this soundbite of our progress!

My son chose Russian for high school, which totally surprised me because we’ve never studied Russian before!

Here we are after five days of practicing:

It’s really unparalleled to make so much progress in just a week!

Starting Russian with just my teenager for his high school experience has 100% felt like I’m investing in little pockets of time with him.

On school days, he sits down with me twice a day for our Practice Sessions.

One of his younger brothers says, “I don’t want to do this.”

And I say, “That’s an option.”

And his brother leaves.

(His brother does other languages with TalkBox.Mom.)

Then we practice for 5-10 minutes each time.

It’s just us two doing something he’s interested in.

No pressure for me to be fantastic—just show up.

It’s delightful.

Then throughout the day, my teenager and I find opportunities to use our Russian phrases.

It feels like a game for just us.

There’s smiling and laughing and aha’s.

We all continue using Spanish and German in our home like before.

(His siblings actually speak more Spanish or German if they hear any Russian.)

My teenager feels special.

And we’re having fun.

Even though I’ve never had my own interest to speak Russian.

I’m here for him.

And will just keep gaining this skill because I’m his practice partner!
