How to Learn German with your Family

The easiest way to learn German as a family is to “Use German at Home” by talking all day long with your family. You can be total beginners or have a level of C1 German like us but lack the everyday phrases used in the home.

STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR PHRASES.

Pick a couple phrases that you and your family would like to incorporate into your life. This book is packed with things parents and siblings say, so it might be hard to pick just a couple. Start with things you say all the time.

Today, two of the phrases Hector and I chose are “Go to the car,” and “Get dressed.” Our kids were so excited that it was our first day with this book that they were fine with what we chose and didn’t make requests.

STEP 2: LISTEN TO THE AUDIO

To get an idea of how the phrases should sound, listen to the native speaker audio and practice talking during the pauses. You definitely do not need to sound perfect when you start. You’ll get better over time! So just try and be happy with your effort.

STEP 3: USE YOUR PHRASES

Whenever you are going to say that phrases in real, everyday life, say it in German! Yes, you’ll sound a bit like Dora the Explorer talking in two languages, but you got to start somewhere. With every phrase, more and more of your life transforms into German.

STEP 4: CHECK THEM OFF

When the phrases just become sooooo easy, check them off your list in the little box. Yay! Soon your book will be full of hearts and checkmarks, your mouth full of natural German phrases, and your mind filled with confidence.

When you learn German like this, you’ll feel so confident when you talk, remember more of what you are learning, be able to practice with your family everyday, and start to naturally understand difficult German grammar.
