First, you need to choose a phrase from your guide–either your box, academy challenge, phrasebook, or Home School Phrases. (But a full phrase. Not a word. Because we’re not cavemen.) Choosing a phrase is important because it gets your whole family on the same page. Everyone knows what phrase you are working on together. This is especially important for native speakers who often skip over this step, catching their family off guard and causing unintended overwhelm.
STEP 2
Second, we practice the phrase. What does this look like? First, we announce what the phrase is in English, so every family member is on the same page, and it feels super easy. Then we practice the phrase with the native speaker audio–not worrying about our pronunciation because it takes weeks to months to start hearing the sounds. After this, we ask our kids if they remember what the phrase means and try it one more time.
The next step to practice a phrase is practicing that phrase in a situation. For example, saying a phrase how you would say it when you wake up. Or pretending to wake up and say a phrase. Once we practice it in a situation, we train our brains to start using it and increase our level of fluency.
Because, mama, the whole goal here is fluency. Fluency is hearing something said in a foreign language and understanding it WITHOUT translating it to English. And TalkBox.Mom starts with fluency.
STEP 3
The last step is actually using the phrase while life happens–even if you have to “cheat” by looking at your guides that are up or playing the phrase again in the app.
